Just returning from the Dixie Dude Ranch in Bandera, TX - Cowboy Capital of the World. Our little cowboy, Action, made the most of his time at the ranch. The town of Bandera holds a rodeo every Friday night during the summer, featuring bull riding, calf-roping and barrel racing. Kids can enter to mutton bust - to you city folk, that's the term for ridin' sheep.
Well, Action swore that he could win mutton bustin, so we showed up and entered him against the 17 other kids on the list (including Skibbie, cousins and new-found dude ranch friends). He climbed the shoot when his turn came and mounted that sheep like he had done it a dozen times (this was his first time). The gate opened and off he went - all the way to the other end of the arena. I was, of course, screaming with pride - after all, how many people can say their kid can bust a mutton?!? He won $46! Big Daddy had already promised $20 to any of the kids who won, and the owner of the Dixie Dude promised him $5, if he won. Adding the $10 he found earlier in the day while picking up trash at the local creek (what a good boyscout he is!), Action ended Fri night with $81 in his pocket! Skibbie instantly became his press agent telling everyone who would listen about his new-found/new-earned fortune.
Watch the video and learn what we did - don't bet against the boy! I was upset that I did't catch the end of the ride where the cowboy gave him a high-five and he ran down the length of the arena with both fists over his head, Rocky-style.
