Confessions of a Homeroom Mom (oops! make that Homeroom Parent)

The last day of school is tomorrow and we are scurrying about to get the teacher gifts wrapped, and make the last preparations for the Christmas party. In the seemingly never-ending quest to separate church and state, our school no longer has a Christmas party.

Oh, there used to be a Christmas party. Then it was down graded to a Holiday party. Then it was downgraded again to a Winter party. This year we have been downgraded to the School Theme party. This means that our peeps will get cupcakes with dog tags on them (the school has a military theme this year - seems appropriate considering it seems as though the Nazi's have taken over the administration).

Every class must have the EXACT same party: One juice box containing colorless juice and One white frosted cupcake with dog tag. Each child will be issued a regulation white plate and white 4" square napkin. Each class will play the exact same game: Bingo. At first, each homeroom mom was allowed to choose the game/activity, but we were warned that it must not be too "Christmasy". I think they got a little scared, so the administration kicked it into high gear and came up with Bingo.

Equality is the name of the game. Let's not be different at all...because you know what it's like in the "real" world.

A military party for Christmas...dog tags? Are you kidding me???

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard! Ok, I'm very happy that in my district my kids are still having a "Holiday Party", but they use the word "Christmas" in our school. Shhh...don't tell the school police. Santa and Rudolph even showed up in the first grade today. Of course they play dreidel games too. My daughter is on the verge of converting to Judaism.

You live in the SOUTH, so I thought it would be more acceptable to have Christmas down there...what's the deal?

The fact that we live in the Bible Belt has always been on our side, but our school has a VERY international population, so I guess the administration has taken it upon themselves to de-Christmas, so as not to offend others. A few years ago some Chrisitian parents got together and sued the school. Obviously, they lost. I wish the school would acknowledge and teach all the religions. One little girl celebrates Rahmidan (sp?) each year, so she sits in the cafeteria and watches others eat while she fasts. The kids find it confusing. Here's where it get weirder - yesterday, they had a holiday Sing-a-Long where they sang about Hannukah, Ede, Christianity, Kwanza, and Rudolph (for the non-believer) - go figure!

How many have Peeped here?
