Craftier and her family left this afternoon. They live in the Wild West, which apparently isn't that Wild anymore, because fireworks have been outlawed in their state.
The whole state.
In Big State, you can't shoot fireworks in Big City, but we sure can in Little Town.
So when we went to the grocery store last night and saw two fireworks stands in the parking lot, Craftier mentioned that Yogi couldn't remember holding a sparkler.
What?! Little Sweet Yogi can't remember one of the purest joys of childhood?
We headed right over to see which stand had the best price on Morning Glory sparklers. They're the best ones. We bought a couple dozen and a few other fun ones that the kids could light by themselves.
After supper, we shot the fireworks off in the cul-de-sac in front of our house. Action loved it. The Morning Glories were a big hit. So were the smoke bombs and these little round plastic things that swirled into the air trailing light behind them. The funniest part was watching Rocket Scientist track and collect the blown apart plastic discs. It was like he was tracking pieces of a flaming meteor falling to Earth.
Action decided that we need to start this tradition every year, but need to include more of his favorite fireworks, like the little tanks and black cat firecrackers.
So my questions are:
1. Is it legal to shoot fireworks in your neighborhood?
2. If so, what is your favorite firework?
3. If not, are fireworks part of your New Year celebration (do you go see a show, watch it on tv, or something else?)

EDIT - The news just announced that Celebratory Gun Fire is illegal. I vow to call the cops if I see folks firing a few rounds into the air.

It's illegal in NY, but we traveled to GA for my grandpa's funeral and arrived on July 4th. My whole family was together for the first time in a long time and we stopped and bought tons of fireworks. My grandpa would have loved them. The kids had the best time with the fireworks and "the boys" (FringeMan, my brother and cousin) created a 3 stooges kind of show for us...it was the best!

Totally legal where we are. At midnight around here, you'd swear we were in an all-out war from all the banging and shooting. We don't do fireworks because the girls really have never asked and they scare the bejeezus out of me. I usually just complain about how loud our neighbors are when I'm trying to go to sleep. Have fun!
